Northport Energy Action Taskforce, Inc (aka Northport Energy) is a non-profit corporation whose goal is to encourage (through educational programs) energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. Northport Energy also works with local agencies in assisting low income families with home weatherization energy saving improvements.
The original organization was formed in 2008. In 2010, Northport Energy was formed as a non-profit by local residents of Northport and Leelanau Township.
Leelanau Community Energy LLC
Leelanau Community Energy shares goals with Northport Energy but is a for- profit LLC. Why have both non-profit and a for-profit companies? The answer lies in the tax laws. Because government energy grants are available only to for-profit companies, NEAT wasn't eligible to take advantage of funding that will be necessary for large projects. Leelanau Community Energy LLC was founded to fund, build and operate wind energy systems. Up to 25 people can become investors in the project and they will become partners in LCE. They must all live in Michigan.
Community wind is a process by which a wind energy system is built and operated by a local community for the financial benefit of the community. See community wind overview
